Balustrading can be a focal point in any home, especially as in many cases it's the first thing you see when entering the home. I can offer variety of balustrading made from materials such as pine, hemlock & oak, with traditional, bracket fix and continuous handrail fitting systems.
Below you can see images of some stopped chamfer balustrading in white oak.
This stairway is made up of a modular, bracket fix system. The string was also clad in white oak which was then finished to the clients specifications.
Balustrading runs to the side of the first floor wall with the capping cut to shape around the corner.

Below you can see the before and after pictures of some 1970's balustrading being brought upto date with a traditional fixing system in white oak..
The old string which never had a newel post fitted!
A solid oak newel stub needed to be housed over the string base to accept the newel turning. |
As the existing string was redwood painted white, I needed to clad this in oak to bring the modular parts together. The floor was also finished with a white oak boarding. |
The face of the 1st floor joist was finished with plaster as appose to planed timber. An apron lining was formed using a white oak board, clad onto the face of the 1st floor joist. An oak trim was then used to cap this on the top edge.
The 1st floor landing which only had a piece of 4"x1" timber as a top newel! As you can see from the picture below, a newel stub needed to be housed over the joist to give a sturdy housing for the newel turning.1st floor landing balustrading finished. The spindles are a colonial style with a ball capping to finish the newel top.
The picture to the right shows the white oak balustrading finished with a clear matt varnish. Four coats was needed, with a light sanding between coats to bring the full beauty of the oak out. |
